The Rev. Paul “Peter” Hogg is Called as Interim Rector
The Vestry has previously announced its unanimous decision to call the Reverend Dr. Paul (“Peter”) Hogg Jr. as Interim Rector of Grace Church. Peter and his wife, Toni, are expected to join us in September. Peter’s first day in the office will be Tuesday the 7th and his first Sunday will be the 12th. Peter characterizes himself as a lifelong Virginian and “Tidewater born (1946) & bred.” Raised in Newport News, he spent many summers in Gloucester Point, which he and Toni now call “home base” during these years of interim work while their Virginia Beach permanent home is temporarily rented to another family.
He graduated from Woodberry Forest School in 1964, Randolph Macon College in 1969, and Virginia Theological Seminary in 1974, where in 1991 he also received the doctor of ministry degree. Peter and Toni — who will be living near The Plains — are the parents of two sons: John, who is married and living in Charleston, S.C.; and Peter Samuel (1976-98).
Peter’s 36 years in the ordained ministry as a rector include St. David’s, Richmond 1974-1979; and St. Aidan’s, Virginia Beach 1979 –2005. After interim training in 2005, he was Interim Rector of St. Martin’s, Williamsburg; St. Paul’s, Richmond; Trinity, Portsmouth; and Christ Church, Raleigh.
During the next 12 to 18 months Peter will help guide Grace Church through a time of transition and discernment using the five developmental tasks of the interim period while helping to fulfill the needs of our parish in worship, pastoral care, education, parish life and administration. His extensive training and skill as a rector and interim rector will help us as we begin the process of profiling and re-examining our parish. Under Peter’s guidance, our interim period will serve as an opportunity for renewal of our vision and goals as we seek to do God’s work.
The Vestry is currently working on plans to welcome Peter and Toni to Grace Church. If you have questions, contact any Vestry member. As we enter the interim phase of transition, please be attentive to transition updates and eNews, bulletin and GraceVine articles. If the church does not have your current e-mail address, make sure to contact Belinda Durney at belinda@gracechurch.net.As Peter and Toni Hogg prepare to join us, and as the Search Committee prepares to undertake its work, the Vestry asks you to pray daily for our parish, our transitional committees, and those laity and clergy whom God has chosen to lead us now and in the future. Please join with the Vestry in welcoming Peter and Toni Hogg to Grace Church.
